the power of gratitude

find your five

This past week I left a doctors appointment in tears and made quite the Oscar worthy scene in the parking lot. Which include a string of expletives, finger pointing, door slamming, and peeling out of the parking lot like a NASCAR driver on his day off in a Honda. This outburst came from deep frustration with a current medical situation, which is besides the point really because it was the mere stepping stone, (ha ha ha okay) in helping me find some inner peace about it.

As speed down route 53 I challenged myself to find one thing I was grateful for after every song I listened to. I was surprised that even in my tear-filled raging state that I could quickly come up with people, places and things I was and still am grateful for.  Having those five things right in the front of my mind helped me take a breath and truly realize how blessed I was. And how this frustration and unfortunate situation is temporary.

Gratitude leads to happiness, for it is moments of gratitude that we step back and understand that we have so much in our lives to be happy about, have so much to invest ourselves, and have so many people that we love.

I’ll humor you with my list and the songs that helped me come up with them:

Are You Mine? by the Arctic Monkeys- thankful for my brother who is my best friend, introduces me to cool music and has more patience with the youngest than I ever will.

Despascito by the biebs- thankful for my OL family who never failed to make me while playing this song and so beyond thankful for them and our time on campus.

Versace on the floor by the next James Brown (bruno mars)- thankful for my dear high school homies who bought spur the moment tickets to this legend a couple of summers ago.

Hurricane by Luke Combs- thankful that I had enough in my messed up gas tank to get home and didn’t have to stop

80’s Mercedes by Marren Morris- super thankful for my health !!!! because you have nothing without it!!!

so i hope that the next time you have a moment or many that leave you feeling upset, enraged or deeply hurt that finding five things or more, will leave you feeling more relaxed and a bit more positive 🙂

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” Eckhart Tolle
