churning change

hi hello hola

So recently, I made the bold decision to share this platform through my social media. I have been keeping this project as a secret since the summer, but I am excited at the thought of my audience expanding. So with that being said, welcome any new readers to the shenanigans.

There is a story of a girl. A girl who loved the ocean. She craved the crashing of the waves and the reflection of the sky on the surface. In her bare feet, she would stand at the shore, and let the water barely touch her toes.

But even in the hottest days of summer, the girl would never go in the water. She preferred to stand at the edge, and see the beauty of ocean from a distance.

The girl saw others in the water, riding the waves or diving down looking for shells. But she never partook and never waded in deeper than her ankles.

But one day, everything changed. And the girl stood before the ocean and let the water meet her knees. Another deep breath and the water met her waist. In one magnificent leap, the girl dove into the wave and allowed the water to surround her. And as she bobbed to the surface she realized how much she had missed by simply standing at the surface.

For holding the ocean at an arms length, she had denied herself the chance to be a part of something beautiful and powerful. She no longer was admiring the ocean from the safety and security of the shore. The girl was part of the ocean, she was beautiful and powerful.

Now you may have guessed this, but yes I did alter this story a bit for the sake of this post.

As human beings, we are really good with consistency and routine. Take a moment to think about your daily routine. I am pretty confident you can rattle what your tomorrow will look like easily. Normalcy is comforting to us, having a schedule gives us structure, a plan provides security.

And my planner is basically my religion, and personally I was pretty rattled when I came home from school the first time and my siblings had transformed my bedroom into a massive fort. But there needs to be a balance of both certainty and uncertainty in our lives, we must create and seek out change.

Change is like wicked scary. No joke man. You need it though.

For the best things in life cannot be found on your calendar, inbox or resume. For the most beautiful things in life are not planned.

Change causes doubt, fear, confusion, anxiety, questioning. We often deny change, or try to push it off till next week. Like “hey change, can I catch you later?”But with change and uncertainty comes amazing things too. Making a change or plunging into uncertainty allows for growth, resiliencey to surface, and the discovering of something beautiful.

As much as our days blur together, each one is still an opportunity to allow change and potential growth into our lives.

You push yourself to run that extra mile, even though you are scared. There’s a whole new world out there after 3.1

You apply for that job despite the fact it is completely unrelated to your degree but you know there is a chance it could work.

You allow yourself to be still with thoughts, ignoring the fear you have about what you might hear.

Challenge yourself  be vulnerable to change. To be like the girl and allow the ocean to overwhelm you, to let yourself go in the beauty of the unknown. The unknown permits the discovery of our truest sense of self, we are called to the unknown because it is there in the raging sea where we find out who we truly are. And that alone is scary, do we really want to know who we truly are?

All of this is easier said, written, typed or published than done. But the question of change still remains.

Will you stand at the edge, with the waves just brushing your toes?

Or will you join me in the seas of unknown?

I hope to see you there.

sincerely,

emma
